VOISS is a research-backed extended reality (XR) platform that gives middle school students structured, scenario-based practice in social skills, designed to enhance social skill instruction by giving students an immersive environment where they can learn and practice to more quickly meet their goals between one-on-one sessions with educators.

What's the research base behind VOISS?

VOISS was developed over more than a decade of research in real classrooms, in partnership with the University of Kansas's Department of Special Education, which is the #1-ranked public special education program in the country. VOISS has been used by more than 3,000 students and 300 teachers, with published research on its effectiveness available on our Research page.

Does VOISS support IEP goals?

Yes. VOISS includes 140+ scenarios covering 180+ discrete social skills, which map well to common IEP goal areas like initiating conversation, conflict resolution, perspective-taking, and self-advocacy. The VOISS Admin Module lets you track which skills a student is working on and progressing through, which can support goal documentation.

How do we assess where a student should start?

The VOISS Admin Module includes a point-in-time inventory assessment that evaluates a student's current skills and generates a recommended starting point and scenario sequence for each individual student, so your student knows where to begin.

How do we monitor student progress?

The admin dashboard provides ongoing progress monitoring, so you can see which scenarios a student has completed, how they're performing, and where they may need more support, giving you useful context for each of your one-on-one sessions.

What devices and technical setup do we need?

Students can use VOISS on tablets (iPads and Android devices), computers (Apple and Google Chromebooks), and VR headsets (Meta Quest / Oculus), and the apps can be downloaded on the Google Play, Apple, and Meta Horizon app stores (a headset is not required). Educators can access the VOISS Admin Module on any web browser. Most schools will be able to use VOISS right away on devices they already have (a VR headset is not required).

Is VOISS appropriate for a range of ability levels and student needs?

VOISS was designed specifically for students with social skill deficits, including students who experience anxiety with social communication, but VOISS is also useful for students who could benefit from additional social skills practice. The VOISS Inventory in the VOISS Admin Module helps educators choose scenarios based on each individual student's needs.

What does it cost, and how do we bring VOISS into our school or district?

VOISS pricing is based on student accounts, which includes an unlimited number of educator logins for the VOISS Admin Module. Please contact us for special pricing for students who will use VOISS at your district or school or purchase individual licenses here on our website.

How do I get VOISS for my child?

You can download VOISS directly for free trial access on your device of choice, or purchase full access through our website. If your child's school or district already uses VOISS, ask their special education team whether you can be added to their existing program.
